Teaching Philosophy

I teach people first and voices second. A productive voice lesson cannot happen without first creating an affirming, safe, and joy-filled rapport with the student. Voices are deeply connected to bodies, souls, and minds and cannot be separated. Therefore, I seek to empower students to take risks and step out on their own. Risk-taking as a mindset is the most important skill in learning to sing. In helping students to let go of tension and discover their own authentic voices, I teach skills that carry over into life regardless of whether or not they choose to become professional singers.

The process of learning vocal technique is that of uncovering rather than building. All voices have potential to sing beautifully and efficiently. By releasing tension and using the breath to energize the sound, the singer learns to trust the resonating space. My principle is to teach from an evidence-based and scientifically accurate lens, while taking into account the learning style of the person in front of me. Powerful teaching often combines accuracy with activity and leads to the creation of imagery to fully reinforce lasting changes in vocal technique. I hold singing as an art in equal importance to singing as a science. An impactful performance stems from not only a stunning technique but also a commitment to expressive and well-motivated choices. Emotion is not an opposing force to good singing, but rather a driving force to an energized and beautiful sound.

Lastly, I take an individualized approach to each student. Singing is not a one-size-fits-all process. Each voice, body, and personality has unique needs. My role as a teacher is to guide the student to find the best approach for themselves when it comes to technique, repertoire, and performance persona. This approach celebrates the diversity voices in the studio and recognizes the humanity of each soul.
